Next Project- Replacing Siding and Deck Damage

Photos coming soon of this fiasco!  To make a long story short… we have this weekend only to replace the water damaged siding on the back of our house, and the rotted deck boards on our back deck.  Why???  Because we are trying to get this house refinanced and we don’t want to lose our locked in rate.  Such a pain in the you know what!  I was planning on designing and having the King Fish built several raised garden beds for our garden this Spring/Summer.  But that had to be put off.  Ugh! 
So while The King Fish works on that project, I am on Pinterest gathering ideas for our next several projects!  Care to know what we’ll be attempting next?  Well the following are in the running. 
1.  Swap bedrooms so the two oldest boys can finally have their own room, and Small Fry and Munchkin can share a room.  This will probably happen sometime late this summer.  The big guys and I are gathering ideas on Pinterest for how they want to decorate their rooms.  One wants to go all out SPORTS.  At least he is into having a chalkboard wall so he can draw his own sports stuff on their, which will save me on the bright team colors!  He wanted to go Kelly Green and Gold and Orange.  Ummmm….. NOT!  Unless you have a hunting theme or Duck Dynasty.  LOL!  He wants a big cool mural on the wall, and I can see it black and white too.  I think his space will end up looking cool.  The other son wants to go vintage/industrial.  I am very psyched about his room.  He wants to go “”junking” with me at architectural salvage shops,the habitat for humanity re-store, flea markets and yard sales to find the stuff to decorate his room.  A kid right up my alley!  I have an old 1920’s wooden office chair that he can totally borrow (it was my dad’s and who knows where he got it, plus we have an antique typewriter that he could totally use in his space as well.  Music/guitars and old license plates plus industrial lighting will grace his space.  Below are some ideas I’ve been checking out.


 


2.  The second option is to re-do the dining room.  That one “seems” like it would be pretty simple.  But nothing is ever really simple here at our house.  We always seem to start a project and find that it requires more work than we initially thought.  The dining room needs to be reconfigured and a piece of furniture needs to come out.  It is tight in there…..  We use it for a work station for school, and for china storage etc… and for eating whenever we have friends over, which is rare.  Plus it’s where I teach my classes to kids outside the home.  I need more space in there and the table can expand to seat 10 comfortably, but right now it can’t because it’s at an angle.  I need everything back and straightened up.  We would have to change the doorway trim on two doors in the dining room, change the window trim, and then add new boards and batten (but more formal) to the lower part of the walls.  It currently has crown molding and beautiful dental molding that the previous owners did not paint.  So that will have to be done.  Plus, I want to stain the pretty buffet I bought two years ago.  I have no idea what color I will go.  I am leaning toward a sea blue/green.  My friend painted her shutters and door that color and it transformed her house.  Here is the molding I am thinking about for the lower half of the wall.

3.  Third option is to re-do the doorway trim and baseboard molding in the upstairs hallway.  We already have all the paint we need, it would just be a matter of changing out the trim.  I would also love to have the King Fish add crown molding upstairs, but that will probably have to come later…. if I just get the doorways changed and the wall re-painted I will be happy!
4.  The garden is a given.  But I really would like to add raised bed this year.  I think it will make the prep work much easier next year, AND keep the critters like chipmunks etc out of the garden.  Or at least keep most of the critters out.  I was thinking of a couple raised beds like this.  I think if you click on the photo it will take you to a great step by step link of how to build this yourself. 

5.  Finally, What I would really like to do is put a fence around our entire property.  I am really tired of dogs coming into our yard and using it as their personal bathroom.  Plus Munchkin is scared to death of dogs and we have two neighbors in particular whose dogs get out all the time.  I would like to keep them out of our play area.  Plus I think a fence would add character and when combined with the right landscaping…. it can add privacy.  We desperately need privacy in our side yard!  I LOVE the fence below.  It really goes well with the farmhouse type clapboard and it looks just beautiful with the flowering dogwoods that provide some privacy. 

So there you go!  My dreams for projects for this year.  Not sure if we’ll get all of them done, or maybe one or two.  But I’m having fun on Pinterest gathering a multitude of ideas for when we are ready to move forward! 

Great website- remodeling inspiration!

I just found this GREAT website, and I think I’m in heaven!  It basically is a website for IKEA furniture that is transformed into something even better.  It’s called IKEA Hackers.  You can check it out HERE. 

Oh my goodness!  I loved this idea for the Billy Bookcase.  It’s just turned on it’s side and sections are added for toys to be stored and displayed.  Very cute!  We happen to have one that is on it’s last leg, and could certainly be transformed into this!  Even if I used it to display items at a used curriculum sale, it would be sweet!

The next photo is what I REALLY want to do for the boys bedroom.  So, we’ve moved them into the old playroom, and it’s working great!  They have so much more space, but no closets.  There is a small room off of the playroom where they can watch TV or play their video games.  It has a sleeper sofa for company to stay as well.  I originally was thinking of putting IKEA wardrobes in that smaller room…. but then I saw the photo below and began to re-think it.

 

I actually have this wardrobe in our homeschool room.  It’s just in white with a window pane door.  It stores all my manipulatives and the kids crafts supplies and games.  To see more of our school room click HERE. 

The wardrobe comes in several finishes and door fronts. Here’s my thought for the wardrobe system in the boys bedroom…. It can be store clothes while the boys use the room as a bedroom.  But if we ever need to convert the space back into a playroom, we can just take down the dowel rods and add shelves to store all their games and toys.  Behind closed doors!!  Plus this would sit directly across from a sofa, great for a TV.  (That was one of the hacks, the owner basically cut the doors in half to create a TV entertainment area.)  Cool huh?  I love the open side shelving to display all the boys trophies from their various sports activities!

I have fallen in love with this blog.  And I love all the ideas, big and small that this woman tackles for her home.  This is her stairway and it used to be carpeted!  She knew she had real wood under the carpet going up those stairs.  I have no idea what we have, but it’s a simple thing to check.  Just pull up a bit of the carpet…. So I want to check out what’s under my carpet on my stairs!  Because I have wanted to stain my stairs and paint the risers white since for-ev-ah!  Hopefully I won’t be disappointed.  The King Fish (ever so pessimistic when it comes to remodeling projects… or dare I say “realistic”) says it’s plywood… and he certainly may be right.  I’ll be bummed, because my simple inexpensive project just probably tripled or quadrupled in cost… but I’ll never know unless I pull up that carpet!

In the Zone….

You’d think this would be a title describing a recent sporting event or the amount of snow we are supposed to get for our Zone of the country…. but no that’s not what I’m referring to….

In the zone is all about where I am decorating wise.  I am one happy clam to be re-doing our house, and coming up with ideas to make it work for us on a shoestring budget.  Why a shoestring budget?  Well, quite honestly, we have incurred some debt with this latest adoption and we have to work it back off.  So, that $1000 closet system at Ikea is not going to happen he in the Fishbowl.  (I really wish it would!)  No, instead we’re probably going to try to build a system ourselves.  I’m not sure how low we can go on the price… it all depends on the materials needed and how inexpensively I can get them.  I’m going to shoot high and say I can do it for less than $300.  That’s my hope!  I’m researching ideas now.

I’ve moved all the boys rooms around.  The two littles rooms look awesome!  I am so happy with how they are turning out!  I need to find an inexpensive rocker glider for munchkin's room so I have a chair in each one.  Then I can read stories to each boy at their separate bedtimes.  Small Fry has all the books in his room, and I will be needing a bigger bookcase.  I believe the King Fish will be building these with shelves that we took down from the playroom. (Built by the previous owner).  The only pieces I will add are crown molding and wainscoting to the back of the DIY bookcase.  I’ve already designed it in my head!  It’s going to be lovely!  (I just need to decide on a color). 

The big boys have taken over the back playroom, as their bedroom, and the smaller back playroom as their gaming area.  The drawback to this is that there are really no closets back in the playroom.  So, their clothes are still in their old room (Small Fry’s new room) and Small Fry’s clothes are in his old room (Muchkins’s room).  Confused yet? 

So that is why I am looking at ways to build a sliding closet wall for my big boys.  This will hopefully be inexpensive enough to not worry about moving it or whatever down the road.  It will go in the smaller back playroom.  I’m also anticipating getting the big boys full size beds down the road.  (Free from family.)  So, I’m going to hold off on revamping their headboards until the new beds arrive.  It may not be for awhile, but we are fine with what we have.  I’ll just hide the dated headboards with lots of pillows!!  But when the new beds arrive this is what I am planning on doing.  I found it on a blog.  I think it was remodelaholic.com  The first two photos are of a pottery barn bed (which I love!) Price: $1600 +shipping. The third photo of the grey bed is a DIY pottery barn type bed.  Made out of wood and MDF.  Price:  Less than $200.  I LOVE it!  I am sooo doing that for the boys when the new beds arrive!  Okay, I’m not exactly doing that, the King Fish is… I’m just gonna tell him how I want it, and then figure out what color I want to paint it. 

The next thing I saw while surfing the net VERY late last night was this photo.  It’s somewhat uglier than the dressers I have for my boys.  (Especially the hardware) but the overall style is similar in lines and the maple wood.  (Even the bottom is similar).  The remodel below was amazing, I almost thought it was a different dresser!

 Holy Crud!  It doesn’t even look like the same piece.  I had to check and see if the bottom was the same, and the middle part that kind of juts out.  Yep it was the same dresser!  Amazing what a little paint, antiquing and new knobs can do! 

I am so a fan of this antiquing look.  My china hutch in my dining room is similar.  I took a honey pine, totally ugly, corner cabinet and went to town several years ago.  It’s one of my favorite pieces in the house. I wish I had a better photo of the whole thing, but I’m too lazy to go and snap another picture and upload it on the computer.  This was just me goofing around with my new camera while The King Fish put up the tree in the dining room.  But it is one of my favorite things… and I love all my white china in there with the pears and the wreaths. 

 

 Back to my big boys room…. so I am determining color scheme etc.  It’s kind of tough as we really don’t have bedding yet.  I want to paint their dressers, but I don’t have a clue yet what direction to go.  That will have to wait until we chose the full size bedding.  I also have a white pedestal table up there that used to be our kitchen table.  But our family was four then and I needed a larger table with a leaf.  So this one went to the playroom.  It will now be used as a place for the big boys to do schoolwork, or build puzzles or play board  games.  Maybe even a place for lego building……  I’m pretty sure the color will change as well, but I don’t have a direction yet.

A friend of mine had a wonderful solution for Lego storage.  Her boys use large shallow boxes (the kind for underbed storage).  They are on wheels so the boys just have to wheel them under and pull them out when they want to play.  I can see The King Fish using some of that wood we took down to build two of these for their many legos!  I envision a nautical type rope on each end to help them pull it out, and a few compartments in the large trundle-like bin, so they can store the pieces they are working on separate from the many Lego pieces they have!   So, so SO much to do and so little time! 

I have one last project that I am working on that I can’t wait to reveal.  I am hoping that this coming weekend our family can finish it, and then I can post photos of it.  Oh and maybe photos of our revamped homeschool room too.  It looks SO much better now!  It’s amazing what two new bookcases from Ikea can do!!

Getting Ready to Redo Some Rooms….

Our current bedroom situation is not working out here in our house.  We have a large bonus room that is not used as often as we would like, mainly because we spend the majority of our time downstairs.  Our big boys share one of the larger rooms, but they are growing and need a bit more space.  Our two little guys are not sharing a room yet.  Mainly because if one cries in the middle of the night, he wakes the other one up.  Once our littlest munchkin is up it’s hard for him to fall back asleep, he feels like he is missing all the action.  And Small Fry is easily distracted….  plus when they were in a room together they woke up at the butt crack of dawn!  That is so not good for this mama who is a night owl.  I need them to at least sleep or play quietly until 7am. Currently littlest munchkin (who still is unnamed on this blog) is sleeping in a pack n play in our bedroom.  We need him out and our privacy back.  I need to be able to read at night so I can fall asleep, and The King Fish, well his !^&# snoring is waking munchkin up!  Did I mention he has a hard time falling back asleep at 3 in the morning?  Did i mention that makes him cranky the next day?  Did I mention that the lack of sleep makes this mama cranky?  Two cranks do not make for a good day, let me tell you! 

So I had the brilliant idea to move all the rooms around. 

The King Fish was less than thrilled with my ideas….

(I think he was being a crank.)

But he said as usual that the house is my area, and if I think it will be helpful to move everyone around then he’s okay with it.  Pretend Eeyore is talking about now.  That’s about how excited he sounded.  Hopefully he will be more “into” it tomorrow when we begin to move everyone around. 

That’s right tomorrow, because I am not waiting another moment for an opportunity to get these guys organized! 

I hated that the playroom was underutilized.  And I hated that it was almost overwhelming in the amount of toys that could be pulled out and dumped everywhere.  Now each room will have age appropriate toys.  Munchkin can actually play with the kitchen center in his room.  And Small Fry can play with the trains and train table, without Munchkin coming in a clearing the table in one fail swoop!  The big boys will have a gaming area right off of their bedroom, and a table and comfy chair to play board games, do puzzles or read a book in peace and quiet.  They can even do their school work if they want to “get away” from the little guys for a bit. 

I’ve been checking out paint colors because, well, I just hate picking colors.  Most people who know me, know that.  I’m too color sensitive!  But for now I’m just going to move the furniture and then I’m going to let the big guys give me a hand in picking the colors and setting up their room the way they would like.  I think they’re gonna have fun! 

So here are some photos of boys rooms.  I’m not particularly fond of anyone…. They are more for input than anything.

  The first one I like because Sidney Crosby’s hockey jersey of our beloved Penguins is on the wall, and that makes a pretty cool boys room!

This next one I chose because I like the black bed. The boys beds are a cherry color.  I picked the headboard and footboard up at Goodwill in Maryland for $10 each.  yes $20 for two beds!  And I have dressers that practically match too.  But I’m debating painting them black.  It goes with practically anything….  But the dressers may be a future antique, and I would hate to ruin them.  So, I’m not sure what to do….  What would you do?

This next photo I chose because I actually liked the wall color.  It looks like a subtle blue gray.  Not sure how it would look with cherry wood.  It’s actually more like a red maple, but cherry is close enough. (I also like the headboards in this photo)

  I like the subtle blue/gray to go with the subtle stripes in the bedding.  But I don’t want the room to be too cute.  I also think a warm gold would look nice with the furniture. 

Here is their current room… with bedding.  I changed my mind about the wall color in their room.  It’s kind of bland.  Maybe it’s the bedskirt I dislike.  Maybe a brown color or something else.  There are no wood slats, so unless that quilt comes down pretty far it shows the metal rails and a lot of stuff under the bed.  I’d like to be able to get the boys new bedding, but I am trying to do this at a very “very” low cost!  Like maybe just the paint and a few flea market finds.  I’m already seeing a neutral bedding palette, but I’m sure my boys will have NONE of that!

 

SO, any suggestions out there???  Paint the furniture?  Paint the walls?  Both?

Now is the time to de-lurk and give me your opinion on all of the above or whatever!

DIY Design- Show Your Team Spirit!!

We are big sports fans here.  With The King Fish and three boys, how could we not be?  We like all kinds of sports and we all have several favorite teams.  One of my IRL friends has this idea in her kitchen.  It’s  a border of black chalkboard paint above her cabinets and near the ceiling.  She and the kids take turns drawing and decorating with all kinds of colorful chalk.  Whenever they have special occasions or get the urge  to change things up, they just take a wet rag and erase the previous design, and then create a new one. 
I thought this would be an excellent way to show our team spirit in the garage!  I mean, it’s not permanent (the drawings that is), so we can switch it up anytime that we like.  Plus it’s an inexpensive way to add a fun design, and my boys loved to create this.

Here is the King Fish painting the black chalkboard border.  We only used two walls in the garage, as the rest were full to the top with storing tools and bikes etc.   

Here are the boys just beginning to work on their team drawings and masterpieces with lots of chalk.  It’s a good thing we took Art this year, as it provided us with lots different colored chalks to use.

DIY Design - Garage Update

Gosh, it’s been so long since I updated on the DIY section.  I swore that I posted updated photos of the garage process… but I went back through all my posts and I didn’t.  Hmmf.  Go figure.  Anyway, we are moving along on the garage/game room.  I have a few photos to post of the walls and design process.  The workbench to house all the tools is complete, but The King Fish just needs to clean it up.  He’s working on installing 3 ceiling fans in the garage right now, so he’s busy using those tools!  BTW- We got those 3 ceiling fans on Craigslist for $20… for all three!!  Pretty awesome!  I will be working on our coat rack storage among other things.  It’s a busy weekend. 
We have a long table that we also found on Craigslist when we lived up North.  It’s been a junk storage table, but now it will be storing camping gear below, and a few items above (until they can be sold in a yard sale).  It’s a pretty wide table, so there is still plenty of room for working.  It’s going to become the model making table, and the snack table, and the hang out table.  Yesterday the King Fish took a break from renovating.  He, Tiger Shark and Jabber Jaw all built model cars.  When the King Fish was their age he was really into model car/plane building, so this was fun for him!  (The boys too!)  We have some folding chairs that they pulled up to the table, but I am thinking about getting these table height saddle bar stools.  It’s the one splurge I’m considering for the garage.  What do you think?

Weekend Update

Just a quick update, as our weekend is drawing to a close.

None of our home projects were completed this weekend.
None.

I don't even want to talk about it... all I'm going to say is this:
Our weekend time is just like sand sifting quickly through an hour glass. Before I know it, the weekend is over and my King Fish heads back out of town.  It stinks.
And I'm not gonna say anything else about it.

On a good note of things accomplished... I memorized the entire first chapter of James this weekend.
Seriously, I did!
I'm so stinkin' proud of myself. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, because we've been studying James and reading it every week. But, I in no way had it memorized. But like I said my friend Stephanie totally inspired me last Thursday night... and I set out to memorize the first chapter of James. I'll work on the next chapters in a few weeks.
As a cute side note, Small Fry is totally into Thomas the Tank Engine. We would really like to take him to see A Day Out with Thomas, but we aren't sure if we can swing it financially yet. Anyway, he loves Thomas and all his friends.
So this Sunday night driving home from church I asked the kids, "Who wants to hear mommy read James?" Which basically means recite James, as I was driving the car. One of the boys usually grabs the Bible to check and make sure I get all the verses correct.
So after "reading" James out loud for about 5-10 minutes, to just about the end, I asked how I did.
The boys all chorused "Great!!" and Small Fry piped in with:
"Read Gordon Mommy, Read Gordon!"
LOL!
I let him know there was no book of Gordon in the Bible. :-)

Garage Ideas and Update

Well, the garage organization is still moving along slowly.  It’s a lot of work, I’ll say that!  It’s also hard to figure out exactly where we’ll be putting things, since some things will be leaving our garage.  (Through yard sales and various means).  The work bench is just about complete, it just needs to be cleaned up and the tools put away.  I’m going to tell you now that The King Fish won the battle of the black shelves.  I wanted to get rid of two of those and use one for the boys sports equipment etc.  Well, we kept the one I wanted to use, but we also moved one closer to the King Fish’s workbench.  He has stored his larger tools on it, some tool boxes, and at the very top a couple of deer antlers.  He wanted to hang them on the wall….
um… “No”. 
He said hunting is a sport and it would fit right in with the garage sports theme. 
Again… um…. that may be true, but… “No”. 
I think of our old neighbors, whose husband went bow hunting in Canada and got himself a nice big bear.  Their family room proudly displayed that life size stuffed bear standing up near the fireplace.  Standing!  Huge!  Bless that woman….. 
How did I get from the garage to hunting?  Good grief!  Back to our garage….
So, we’ve hung pegboard, and hung others devices for getting all kinds of toys, tools and lawn and garden equipment off the ground.  The two tables are almost cleared off too.  Okay, well maybe not, but I can see the table again, and a few days ago I couldn’t even see it!   For awhile there I was muttering to the King Fish about how I couldn’t believe that with all  the work we did the garage actually looked worse!  I guess it has to get worse before it gets better… and better it will be.
I’m going to paint the walls in the garage too.  I’m still thinking of a paint color.  The King Fish wants nothing dark.  As a matter of fact, he suggested the palest beige, almost white.  I replied that if that was the color choice, we should just leave the walls white.  I too can’t go crazy bold with color.  It’s completely out of my nature.  So, a tan wall may be in store.  I’m looking for a medium tan color so I can hang lots of Professional team signs.  My boys like different teams and they are all different colors,  (ie: Penguins, Braves, Jets, Astros, Eagles, Dolphins) so it should work with a neutral base. 

I’ve been searching online for garage/game room ideas. While ours will still have an abundance of tools; they should mostly be out of the way.   Anyway here  are a few of the photos of DIY garage remodeling projects that I found.

This one is a 50’s retro garage.  I actually like the look but not for our theme. 

I like the round tables and bar stools, and the signs of the wall.

This one is another bold blue color.  I definitely won’t be using either one of these paint colors for our garage.  But here are some areas I like.  Love the ceiling fan, it looks sort of industrial and like it could withstand a bunch of boys playing in their everyday.  I also like the curtain, it softens it up a bit.  I like the shelves for closed storage and the built in seating area for after school work.  I also like the mini fridge too.  :-)

 Here is another photo of that same remodel.  In this one I love the framed chalkboard on the wall.  It looks like they used chalkboard paint.  We already own that, since we have two framed boards in our kitchen.  This will be a feature I add to the garage for keeping score during their games. Very cool idea!

The photo below is probably closer to the wall color I would choose.  I think the floor was painted with an epoxy too.  That won’t even be happening in our garage.  I’m lucky the King Fish agreed to paint the walls and consider ceiling fans…. I’m sure the floor paint would be nixed.  (At least for now)   

Now remember that all  these photos show no garage tools.  They have been completely made over into game rooms.  We have to use the space for a dual purpose, so while I would love my garage to look this good, it will never be that great, because of all our tool storage.  Which is okay… really.  As long as it’s more organized, and I can actually walk through it without tripping over everything!

Finally here is my favorite garage remodel.  It isn’t a game room…. the woman turned it into a studio for art maybe?  It is so pretty… I loved all that her husband did to it!  It’s hard to imagine it was ever a garage!

 

Garage “Before” Photos

I can’t believe I’m going to post this…. but it’s the reality of our garage.  Now you know why I want The King Fish to organize and build a workbench! 

I know not “everything” is going to fit on or under the workbench.  But I would like to see at least two of the large black metal shelves go away.  Or even if they have to stay… which I hope they do not, I’d like to have everything neat and in bins or something.  The King Fish says it can’t be done.  I say…. “watch me”.

 This stuff just really needs to be put away.  And some of it needs to be sold at a yard sale.

This is everything piled on and around our air hockey table.  It’s crazy!  That pub table was given to us to sell at our yard sale to raise money to bring Small Fry home.  It didn’t sell.  It now stores more tools.  Anytime a tool needs to go back into the garage, it gets put on that table to be filed away later.  Only later doesn’t usually happen.  I will be glad when all The King Fish’s tools have a new home.

This is the cleared space for the new workbench.  I didn’t get a picture of it… but the space was filled with wood.  Building materials that The King Fish saved to use one day.  Because you never know when you will need some building materials.  He saves everything.  Once he took apart shelves that the previous owner built, and he saved the wood.  Which actually came in handy because we will build our coat wall rack from that wood.  I don’t mind his saving materials, because we have both always been about re-using and finding a new purpose for an old “something”.  That “something” could be an old table, wardrobe or even building materials.

Here is the workbench almost framed out.  He’ll hopefully finish it off next weekend when it is raining.  I can’t wait!  I’ll post some more photos of the construction in progress!
